Darwin Dean Matthews, 78, passed away on December 14, 2019 at MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland following a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his wife Sally; brother James, and sisters Jean, Onalee, and Joyce. Darwin will be missed by many, including his children, Howard Dean (Amanda) of Georgia, Sarah (Greg) of Tennessee, Emily (Rob) of Connecticut, grandchildren Sylvia, Davis, Charlie, Mary Rose, Johanna and Alex, as well as a large circle of family, friends and neighbors.
Darwin was born on August 9, 1941 in Flint, Michigan to the late Howard and Rose (Muma) Matthews. He graduated from Houghton Lake High School in 1959 and worked at AC Spark Plug in Flint. Darwin was drafted in March 1965 and served in the United States Army as an Air Traffic Controller until 1967. He lived in Florida training to be a pilot until he returned to Michigan in 1970 to help on the family farm.
It was during this time that Darwin met his beloved Sally (Meyer) and they were married in 1971. The couple moved to Midland in 1973 where they started their family. In 1979, they purchased the family home in the community of Hope, where their family grew and flourished and where Darwin resided until his passing.
Darwin was employed by Dow Corning Corp. at the Midland Plant as a Boiler Operations Specialist for over 30 years until he retired in 2003.
Darwin enjoyed making memories with his children, their spouses, and his grandkids, travelling throughout the United States with his faithful dog Pepper at his side. He became a member of Hope United Methodist Church in August 1979; he was a shining example of Living to be the “Hands and Feet” of Christ as an active member of the church family ever since. Darwin especially loved camping, spending time outdoors, and any opportunity to enjoy good food and conversation.
