Darwin A. “Bass” Wells, 83, of Freeport, died Saturday, May 19, 2007 at FHN Memorial Hospital. Born January 11, 1924 in McConnell he was the son of Floyd and Mary Jane (Shippy) Wells.

He married Clara B. Kent September 27, 1947 in Elizabeth and she died April 8, 2006. He graduated from Winslow High School in 1941. He was a World War II Army Staff Sergeant in the 34th Infantry Division serving the European, African, and Middle Eastern theaters with three Battle Stars. He was a charter member and Past Commander of McConnell American Legion Post number 1225.

Bass owned and operated the Turtle Town Tavern in McConnell, then worked for Oak Brand Ice Cream for over twenty years, and then was owner and operator of a butter and cheese route for years until his retirement. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, and especially spending time with his family.

Surviving are four children, Sue (Gary Sr.) Eisenhower of Freeport, David (Penny) Wells of Lena, Mary (Mark) Johnston of Westerville, Ohio, and Julie (Terry) Atz of Freeport; his grandchildren, Gary Jr. (Lisa) Eisenhower, Jaecea Wells, Jerick Wells, Heather Johnston, Courtney Johnston, and Kirsten Atz; great grandchildren, Alexa and Noah Eisenhower; one sister, Norma Muggler of McConnell; his special nephew, Rick Zellweger of Orangeville. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and one sister, Carol Meyers.
