Darrell “Mac” McFarland, age 81, of Algona, died on Thursday, January 24, 2013 in Sergeant Bluffs, Iowa. Darrell Otto McFarland, the son of George Otto and Ada Blanche McFarland, was born on December 4, 1931 on the family farm north of Burt. He graduated from Burt High School in 1949. On September 14, 1952 Darrell was united in marriage with Louise Rusk at the Burt United Methodist Church. Mac joined the Iowa Army National Guard in 1950. He served on active duty for one year at Ft. McCoy and one year in Germany during the Korean War. Mac retired as a Staff Sergeant after 24 years of service. He owned and operated M&D Auto in Burt with his son-in-law Darrell Davis. Mac then worked in several Algona businesses as an auto mechanic and tractor mechanic until 1993. Mac was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir. He was also a member of local organizations, Golden K Kiwanis, Burt Lions, and the Cornbelt Chorus. He enjoyed golfing for 50 years and bowling in leagues in Algona and Bancroft. Left to cherish Mac’s memory is his wife of 60 years, Louise; a son David McFarland and his wife Terry of Sergeant Bluff; a daughter, Marlene Davis and her husband Darrell of Algona; seven grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and a sister, Ruth Riedel and her husband Laurence of Algona. He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Londa Davis; two sisters, Gretchen McFarland and Blanche Long; and a brother, Harley Doyle McFarland.
