Darrel R. Shantz, 85, of Elkhart, passed away Monday afternoon, April 6, at Greenleaf Health Campus.

He was born April 28, 1929, in Elkhart County, to the late Paul A. and Neva (Sechrist) Shantz.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Beverly “Joan” Shantz (they were married June 4, 1949, in Elkhart); his children, Cathy Shantz Hammond and Susan Shantz, both of Florence, Ky., Nancy (Bob) Clarke of Elkhart and David (Lisa) Shantz of Union, Ky.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Jenettie Grass of Mishawaka; brother Larry Shantz of Fishers; and his loving aunt, Betty Recchio.

In addition to his parents, his brothers, Devon and Dwayne Shantz, and a sister, Jean Mills preceded him in death.

Darrel spent his entire life in the Elkhart area. Darrel worked as a tool and die maker for CTS Corp. until his retirement. He formerly worked as a painter at Studebaker Corp. and at NIBCO.

He was a member of the Quarter Century Club at CTS and was a member of Tyrian Masonic Lodge 718 F.&A.M.

Darrel was one of the co-founders of the Cleveland Township Little League. He enjoyed traveling and gardening. Many summers were spent at his beloved Drummond Island in Michigan.

Darrel will be remembered as a thoughtful man and a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed by all who knew him.
