Daniel Stainbrook, age 42, of Hancock, Wisconsin, passed away Monday, November 15, 2021, at University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison.

Daniel was born in Wisconsin Rapids on March 15, 1979, to Tim and Ann (Huff) Stainbrook.  He was united in marriage at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Rapids to Bernadette Ball on February 9, 2002.  He graduated from Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids in 1997, and then obtained his Associate’s Degree in Police Science from Mid-State Technical College.  He was hired by the Wisconsin State Patrol in 2001.  In his 20-year career, he earned the rank of Master Trooper, was a firearms and vehicle contacts instructor, and responded to countless emergencies to give aid.  He earned a lifesaving award in February of 2020.

Daniel was regarded as a “Knight in Shining Armor” by his wife.   He was an incredibly loving and playful father to his two daughters.  He was his family’s rock that could always be counted on.  Together he enjoyed countless outdoor adventures with his wife and kids, in whom he fostered a love of nature that will endure forever.  He had many good and true friends that share with his family countless happy memories that continue to be light in this dark time of grief.  His greatest legacy is his children, who inherited so many of his fine qualities.

He was an avid outdoorsman including fishing, hunting, trapping, camping, kayaking, and more.  His wife likes to joke that he was “feral” and that he enjoyed the outdoors more than the comfort of the indoors any day of the week or in any season.  He had a mischievous streak and is well known for the “Dan smirk” that lit up his face when he was up to something.  He lived life to the fullest and was a big kid at heart. He was kind, gentle, compassionate, and full of joy.  Sketching was a hidden talent of his and he could draw beautiful wildlife art.  He was a Trappers’ Education instructor and was well known for being willing-and-able to help anyone that asked for his help with pesky critter issues.

Daniel is survived by his wife: Bernadette Stainbrook; daughters: Karen (boyfriend Braeden Gray) Stainbrook and Caitlin Stainbrook; faithful dog Bridger and affectionate cat Loki; his parents Tim and Ann Stainbrook; brother Brian (Heather) Stainbrook, sister Jessica (fiance Mark Cannon) Stainbrook; father and mother-in-law David and Donna Ball; siblings-in-law: Stephanie (Kevin) Nuthals, Frances (Scott) Meek, Benjamin Ball, Sarah (Mike) Keiler, Elise Caldwell, and Barbara (DJ) Skidmore, as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.  He also had many friends, in whose hearts he will live forever.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Ray and Caroline Stainbrook, and Leslie and Verna Huff and grandparents-in-law:  Helen Klister and Earl and Sidney Thompson.

The family would like to thank the staff at Aspirus Riverview Hospital in Wisconsin Rapids, and the University of Wisconsin – Madison Hospital for trying their best to help Daniel.  The family would like to thank all the people who have shown them so much love and care during his hospital stay and since his passing.
