Obituary of Daniel Lee Monroe

MONROE, Daniel Lee of Des Moines, IA, formerly of Saginaw, Michigan passed away on Friday, May 31, 2013. Daniel L. Monroe was born on October 24, 1939 to Clyde and Josephine Monroe in Coleman Michigan. He graduated High School from Coleman High in 1957 and in 1961 from Ferris State University with degree in Accounting. Dan married the love of his life, Sharon Elizabeth Philp on August 12, 1961. He began his career with General Motors in 1961, where he worked in accounting in both Saginaw, and Detroit, Michigan. He then took the Business Manager position at WNEM TV5 in Saginaw, Michigan, which began his 33 year career with Meredith Corporation Broadcast Group. Throughout his career with Meredith, Dan served in several positions, and loved every minute of his time there. He retired as Vice President of Broadcast in 2001, in Des Moines Iowa, where he lived from 1984-2011. Dan loved sports, having played varsity sports at Coleman High, playing softball for the WNEM TV5 all-stars, volunteering his time with the Saginaw Township North Little League, and D.D Eisenhower High School Athletic Boosters. He was an avid golfer, and spent time watching his grandchildren’s activities, as well as his lifelong favorites, Michigan Wolverines, Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Tigers, and Detroit Lions.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon of 51 years; a son, Mike Monroe and his wife, Sue (Waukee, IA), grandchildren: Alie and Tori, and great grandson, Greyson; a son, Scott Monroe and Amy Robinson (Urbandale, IA); a daughter, Shelley Sanchez and husband, Joe (Freeland, MI), grandchildren: Ashley and Bryce, and step grandchildren: Lauren, Joseph, and Amanda.
