Dan Minor, 68, of Des Moines passed away peacefully on June 29, 2021 at Mercy One Johnston Hospice Care.
Dan was born on February 27, 1953 in Des Moines, IA to Jerry and Jackie (Furth) Minor. Dan was preceded in death by his mother, Jackie and brother in law, Joe McCoy. He is survived by his father, Jerry Minor; his five siblings, Linda Pendergraft, Tom Minor (Nancy), Diane Barnard (Keith), Mary Ann McCoy, and Carol Minor; his nieces, Lauren Riley (Shaun) and Ellie Tysklind (Braydon); his nephews, Jeremy Minor (Meredith), Logan Barnard, and Ryan Barnard; and finally his great nieces and nephews; Jocelyn Riley, Zach Riley, Liviana Riley, Millie Minor and Crew Tysklind.
Dan lived in many places throughout his adventurous lifetime. After graduating from the University of Iowa, he joined the Peace Corps and traveled to Western Samoa to teach English. Upon his return, he moved to the Minneapolis area and started his own company that sold office equipment called Daniel J. Minor Company. His family missed him all those years and finally convinced him to move back to Des Moines, where he worked at Wells Fargo Home Mortgage. He retired there in 2015 and worked at Menards in his retirement to continue meeting new friends.
Dan was a son, brother, uncle and friend to many. He was quick to lend a smile and a laugh with his jolly disposition. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing, riding his bike, and watching Hawkeye sports. He taught everyone in the family to bowl, some successfully and some unsuccessfully. He took his great nieces and nephews fishing each summer, and they caught many bluegills, which turned into 2-foot-long sharks in the stories told upon their return home.
Dan devoted his life and many dollars into improving his golf game. His retirement was spent golfing many times per week. He created his own course book for each course he played on. In 2018, he reached 2nd in his golf league at Woodland Hills and felt like all his work was finally paying off.
Dan loved to go on adventures by himself, driving hours to find a new place to camp or fish. He had his eye on a new fishing reel and was going to spend the summer bass fishing. He inherited the love of photography from his father and enjoyed capturing special moments and scenic landscapes. He was a lifelong learner and took Spanish and guitar lessons for many years. He enjoyed spending time with his second family at The Boathouse in Johnston.
