Dale Emmert Wassom of Deshler, NE the son of James and Gladys(Mahaffey)Wassom was born July 10, 1928 in Hubbell, NE. He departed this life Sunday, November 15, 2009 at Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler, NE at the age of 81 years, four months and 5 days.
Dale was baptized in the Methodist Church in Hubbell and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Deshler, NE.
Dale grew up on a small farm near Hubbell area and graduated from Hubbell High School with the class of 1947.
Dale married Maurine Fegter April 11, 1951 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Deshler. This union was blessed with the birth of two children Merry and Russell. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Korea from 1951 to 1953 as a one star sergeant. After returning home, Dale and Maurine lived in Deshler and continued farming with his family.
In 1953, Dale and Maurine started the Wassom Construction Company. Dale worked for many area farmers with terraces, ponds, and land leveling. He loved running heavy equipment, especially catepillers and helped with the reconstruction of Highway 36 in Kansas. In the early 1960’s, they purchased their first farm. In 1967, he added the sales of Zimmatic Pivots to his business. In 2000 Dale started his last business adventure, selling John Deere irrigation engines. In addition to his many businesses, Dale enjoyed welding, fabricating, building, and fixing things. Dale loved to work and spend time with his family and friends. When around Dale, there was never a dull moment. He was always thinking of ways to help anyone who needed it. If you needed anything Dale would find it for you. Family and friends called him a “wheeler and dealer”. He would be up all hours buying and selling anything and everything.
He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Deshler, and the VFW Club of Hebron.
Dale is preceded in death by his parents, 5 sisters: Hazel Peterson, Novella Wilson, Doris Broadfoot, Viola Schroeder and Izetta Tucker, and 3 brothers: James, Lowell, and Larry.
Dale is survived by his wife Maurine of Deshler, NE, one son Russell and special friend Cheri Tatro of Deshler, NE, one daughter Merry Kellogg and husband Steve of Lincoln, NE, 5 grandchildren Lukus Wassom of Broken Bow, NE, Joston Wassom and wife Veronica of Davenport, NE, Nickolas Wassom of Deshler, NE, Daniel Kellogg and and wife Erica, and Benjamin Kellogg both of Lincoln, NE, brother-in-law Delton Fegter and wife Pat of Lincoln, NE, sister-in-laws; Gloria Reinboth of Deshler, NE, Janice Coordsen of Gilead, NE, Meta Fegter of Deshler, NE and Helen Fegter of Fairbury, NE, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
