Consuelo G. Mills, affectionately known as “Granny C,” was born Consuelo Gonzales on December 19, 1936, in Silver City, New Mexico, to parents Natalia Garcia and Refugio Gonzales. In the summer of 1984, Connie moved to Deming, New Mexico, where she thrived and lived out the rest of her days in the town she called home. An active member of the community she loved, Connie was the Director of Medical Records at Mimbres Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 1998, served on the board for the Steve Bean Memorial Scholarship Fund, was a member of the New Mexico Polio Survivors Group, and, with her husband, belonged to the Elks Lodge. Granny C is survived by her husband, Edwin Mills of Deming, New Mexico; her 7 children, Diane Deemer (Dale Deemer), Bobby Smith (Michelle Smith), Sharon Smith, Russell Brown, Melanie Alexander, Gigi Dougherty (Buddy Dougherty), and Shellie Koons (Shannon Koons); 14 grandchildren, Danielle & Carla Deemer, Heather Smith, Letisha Brown, Brian, Brandon, Sam & Marissa Alexander, Aryn Fort, Drew Dougherty, and Jordan & Jaylen Bulsterbaum; and 4 great-grandchildren, Caleb & Anthony Alexander, Jade Brown, and Malachi Jass.
Consuelo passed away peacefully in her home on the night of June 6, 2017, in the comforting presence of her husband, Mr. Ed, and of her closest friend, Trudy. Granny C will be greatly missed by many and remembered most for her love of travel, her affection for animals, and for having the greenest thumb in the Southwest. Her love of gardening – especially irises – has been inherited by her children.
