He passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at the University of Nebraska Hospital at the age of fifty-two years. Cole was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis as a child and was extremely grateful to have had 3 successful liver transplants in 1994, 2004, and 2014.
