He was employed by the Illinois Department of Transportation, District 6, for two years before joining Casler & Stapleton, a consulting engineer firm in Jacksonville. He spent over 60 years with the firm, now known as Hutchison Engineering, Inc. with offices in Jacksonville, Shorewood, Peoria, and Moline. Clair currently held the title of Chairman Emeritus.
He maintained and provided leadership for many professional affiliations including the National Society of Professional Engineers, Illinois Public Airport Association, Illinois Association of Highway Engineers, Consulting Engineers Council of Illinois, and Illinois Asphalt Pavement Association. In his spare time, “Hutch” loved to fish and hunt, play gin rummy with friends at the Elks Club, join his buddies for a round of golf, root for the Fighting Illini and the St. Louis Cardinals, and spoil his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
