Christy A. Christos, 81, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, July 13, 2005, in Memorial Hospital surrounded by many loving family and friends. He was born on January 9, 1924, in Passaic, New Jersey to Archontis and Cleopatra (Burgess) Christos.
Mr. Christos was a self-employed insurance agent for Citizen’s Insurance Company for 24 years. He was also previously employed, in management, for 27 years with Bankers Life and Casualty Insurance Company.
On June 6, 1954, in St. Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Church, South Bend, Indiana, he married Mary Psalidas. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, their daughter, Patricia Christos Skidmore of Granger, Indiana; two daughters from a previous union, Sylvia (Joe) LeVerett of Indianapolis, Indiana, Christyne McCain of South Bend, Indiana; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth (Joseph) McNulty of South Bend, Indiana; and many cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Christos was a 1941 graduate of Riley High School. While attending Purdue University, he and his two best friends decided to serve their country and enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was in the Eighth Air Force 398th Bomb, 602nd Squadron and flew on B-17s as an armour gunner in Europe, before being honorably discharged. He was an active member of St. Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Church, past vice-president of order of AHEPA 100, was instrumental in the building of the AHEPA Home in Clay Township, and was also a member of the Greek Kafinio Group at the Panorama Restaurant. He was an avid Cub fan since the age of 14, always awaiting a World Series appearance. His passions in life were his family, church and friends.
