Christie Houston Mahar

Loudonville Christie Houston Mahar , died peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 .

Born in Evanston, IL, on April 26, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Livingston Waddell Houston, a former president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, and the late Margery (Caldwell) Houston.

Predeceased by her husband of 57 years, retired officer First Lieutenant Edward F. Mahar and sister, Nancy E. Houston.

She graduated from The Emma Willard School in Troy and Vassar College. Mrs. Mahar was a chemistry instructor at RPI and Syracuse University as well as a substitute science teacher at several area high Schools.

She enjoyed spending summers at the Rhode Island shore with family and friends, playing piano, tennis, traveling, opera and volunteer work. Her special interests include; past Chancel Guild chairperson and communicant of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Albany, past president of the Fort Orange Garden Club, past president of the Junior Friday Morning Club and member of the Junior League and the Schuyler Meadows Club.

In Rhode Island, she was involved with the Weekapaug Chapel Society and Altar Guild, the Weekapaug Tennis and Weekapaug Yacht Clubs, the Westerly College Club and the National Association of Colonial Dames.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Nancy H. Mahar and grandson Sam; a son, Edward C. Mahar, daughter-in-law, Beth and grandson Colin; her sister, Mrs. Frederick C. (Carol) Maynard Jr.; two sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law and several nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
