Chisato “Bess” Higuchi passed away on December 4, 2016 in Albuquerque, NM. She was born on April 30, 1924 in Los Angeles, CA. In 1939 she went to Japan to learn the culture as a representative of her family. She was trapped there during the war, while her family was sent to relocation camps in California. After the war, she returned to the United States, completed training as a secretary, and went to work for the Civil Service. She was sent to Japan and assigned to General MacArthur’s staff. She continued working for U.S. Forces in Japan for the next 38 years.
During that time, she received her doctorate from the University of Maryland. She also began breeding cats leading to her becoming a CFA International Cat Judge. She helped start the Cat Fanciers Association of Japan and judged shows in Japan, Australia, Russia, and Europe.
At the time of her death, Bess was residing in Albuquerque with her daughter.
She is survived by her daughter, Lillian Fesler; her grandson, Lance Fesler; and two great-granddaughters, Naomi Fesler and Malia Fesler.
