Chesnut “Whit” Whitaker passed away peacefully on June 6, 2016, at the age of 91. Whit was born on February 12, 1925 in Camden, South Carolina to Andrew Glassell and May DeKay Whitaker. Whit’s father died in 1926, and his mother died in 1931, so he and brothers (Andrew, John, and Harry) and his sister (Maizie) all grew up at the Thornwell Home for Children in Clinton, South Carolina. The day before he turned 18, Whit enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, and he flew over 30 missions as a navigator on a B-24 bomber in the European theater in World War II. After the war, Whit graduated from Presbyterian College, and in 1952, he moved to Dallas, where he served as the office manager for Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company for forty years. While in Dallas, he met the love of his life, Patricia, and they were married on February 8, 1964. Whit was a long-time member of Ridgeview Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, and he volunteered for several years at the food pantry at North Dallas Shared Ministries. Whit loved to travel with his family and watch the Dallas sports teams (especially his beloved Cowboys). Whit is survived by his wife, Patricia, their sons (Andrew and Clay) and daughters-in-law (Estee and Salli), and their four grandchildren (Madelyn, Hayden, Marisa, and Dashell). Whit’s family would like to thank the staff and residents at Caruth Haven Court and White Rock Court for their care and friendship over the past few years.
