Charles “Sonny” James Niverson Jr. 75. died on December 12, 2013 in the presence of his loving family at Miller’s Merry Manor in Marion. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 55 years Sherrill Elaine Hipskind Niverson, six children, 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was the son of Charles James Niverson and Mary A. Dunham Niverson born in Gas City, Indiana on September 18, 1938.

He retired from Delco Remy, Anderson after 34 years.He worked for 7 years at RCA of Marion, 2 years at Crystal Laundry in Jonesboro. He always worked two jobs, working part time at Hackney’s Gas and Grocery store in Fairmount before starting refereeing. Sonny served his community in the Fairmount Jaycees where he helped put up Christmas lights and was instrumental in bring the carnival to Playacres Park. He served on the Fairmount Town Board and the Park Board. He sold Christmas trees and played Santa Clause with the late Sue Smith and volunteered from the beginning of Helping Hands at Christmas time. along with other benefit work.

He was an official staff member of the Fairmount Museum where he worked setting up for Museum Days and was in charge of the shuttle service. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church of Marion and Holy Family Catholic Church of Gas City.In his youth he attended Salvation Army in Marion and the Baptist Church in Gas City. He was co-owner of Dot’s Diner in Jonesboro with his sister Dorothy from 1995-2000. Sonny was a sportsman, He played softball for Hackneys of Fairmount, Summitville AC and McClure from Marion. He was know as Coach Sonny to many boys who played for him in the Legion Little League team over the 12 years he coached them.He officiated baseball, softball, basketball and football for many years.

He was always supportive and enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports. He was an inventive person being a leader in Suggestion Awards Programin his years at Delco. He loved to remodel and renew the family home and extended hospitality to family and friends.He dearly loved music and dancing. He leaves behind his wife Sherrill Sons;Charles(Karen), Fairmount Gary Lee (Linda), Fairmount Philip (Elizabeth), Marietta, GA Jeffrey (Luz), Rio Rico, AZ Daughters;Elaine (Ronald) Idlewine Suzan (David) Kessinger, both of Fairmount Brother: William R. Niverson, Sweetser and many nieces, nephews and many great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mary, Brother Richard Earl and Sister Dorothy Jean Rennaker, Aunt Mary Parton, Niece, Mary Niverson, aunt Madeline and Uncle Robert Clark and Uncle Raymond and Aunt Lucille Niverson.
