Survivors include his wife, Carol Ann (Murray) Smith of Trafalgar, six children, Linda Ogle of Charlottesville, Roger Smith of Nashville, Lori Welsh and Cathy Rhynearson both of Indianapolis, Mike Smith and Bill Smith both of Nineveh, three sisters, Mary Lemke of Michigan, Barbara Howard of Kentucky and Carolyn Ann Goodman of Tennessee, four brothers, Leonard Smith of Edinburgh, Jimmy Smith and Elmer Smith both of Kentucky and James O. Smith of Martinsville, 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William E. and Ethel (Gilreath) Smith, two brothers, Loyd and Floyd Smith and two sisters, Laurie Allen and Pasty Mae Honeycutt.
