Charles Dewey Montgomery, 92, passed away Sunday, September 12, 2021, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, IA.
Charles was born June 7, 1929, in Des Moines, to Hugh B. and Ella Maun Montgomery. He graduated from East High School in 1947 where he performed in numerous musicals. Charles earned bachelors and masters degrees in English Literature from Drake University. He was a social worker for the State of Iowa for 21 years, retiring in 1994.
Charles enjoyed the theatre and movies, walking outside for exercise, reading books and the paper, and crossword puzzles. He loved finding treasures at thrift stores and sharing them with his friends. Charles had a lifelong passion for learning and was curious about others’ opinions on books read or movies seen.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings, Jack Montgomery, Duane Montgomery, and Marian Gehrk. He is survived by his lifelong friends, Mary Laughlin of Urbandale, Linda Katz of Plano, TX, John Hoene, Carl Mogensen, and many other friends in Des Moines.
