Charles Shorey, age 87, of Spirit Lake, passed away, Friday, August 13, 2009, at Lakes Regional Hospital. He was born on February 18th, 1922 to Edwin Shorey Jr. and Laura Mae (Moore) Shorey, at their Century Farm S.E. of Spirit Lake, Iowa. Chuck, received his education at the Richland #9 Rural School and graduated from Arnolds Park High School. Chuck furthered his education at Iowa State. He married Lucile Froendt, December 7th 1961, in Spencer, Iowa. They made their home on their farm S.E. of Spirit Lake. Lucile passed away, April 27th, 1991. Chuck later married Betty (Colwell) Fox on August 14th, 1992. They continued to live on the Shorey Century Farm until moving into Spirit Lake in 2001. Chuck was active in many community affairs. He was a 4-H leader, on the 4-H Adult Advisory Board, and the first chairman of the Extension Council when it was organized in 1955. He also served on the former Farmers Coop Board of the Terril and Milford Elevators, as Co-Soil Commissioner for 14 years, and on the County Planning and Zoning Board for 12 years. At one time he was a member of the Spirit Lake Bowling Association, serving in various positions. Chuck was a long time member of the Methodist Church, Methodist Men, Masonic Lodge, and Order of the Eastern Star. He was also a member of Kiwanis.
