Charles F. Abernathy Sr., 78, of Smithton, Ill., born April 25, 1928 in Grant County, Ill., died Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, Ill. Mr. Abernathy graduated from Hillsboro Illinois High School. He was a police officer with the City of Indianapolis, Ind. and drove a school bus for Vangalder Bus Company in Rosco, Ill.

He attended Edgemont Bible Church in Fairview Heights, was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 86 in Indianapolis, Illinois Sheriffs Assn., Millstadt VFW, Rosco VFW Post 2955, American Legion Post 0332 in Rockton, Ill and also served for several years on the Rosco Zoning Board. Charles also served in the US Navy, during WW II on a destroyer.

He was preceded in death by his father John V. Abernathy, mother Alta C., nee Foster, Abernathy-King, stepfather Walter King and a brother John Vernon Abernathy. Charles is survived by his wife, Mary L., nee Payton, Abernathy of Smithton, Ill., a son Charles F. & Julia Abernathy of Shiloh, Ill., a sister Marie Hughes of Hillsboro, Ill, 2 grandchildren, Patrick D. & Teresa Abernathy of Boise, Idaho and Suzan & Scott Pruitt of Peyton, Colo. and 9 great grandchildren.
