Charles A. Johnson, age 86 of Shannon, IL, passed away at home Friday, October 11, 2013.
He was born September 4, 1927, the son of Charles W. and Ruth (Riehm) Johnson. He married Louise Miller on January 25, 1947 in Chicago, IL; she died April 11, 2005. Charles served in the U. S. Navy during WWII as a radar technician on the LST 1084 Overton County. He also served during the Korean Conflict on the USS Los Angeles.
He retired from Wyman-Gordon Co. in Harvey, IL, and had previously worked for Pullman Standard Car Co. He had been Civil Defense Director during the mid 70’s in Posen, IL. His memberships include St. Wendelin’s Catholic Church in Shannon, the Shannon American Legion Boyle-Hoy Post #379, a lifetime member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars in Midlothian, IL Post #2580, and visited the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars in Chetek, WI Post #10331. He was also a member of LST 325 Association docked in Indiana and United States LST Association. He enjoyed fishing and his family.
Charles is survived by his daughter, Beverly Louise Ulmenstine, Harvey, IL; two sons, Alan (Debbie) Johnson of Shannon, IL and Eric (Laurie) Johnson of Valparaiso, IN; Twelve grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Stone of Kettle Falls, WA and Gertrude Iwanski of Alamogordo, NM; and his brother, Harold (Marie) Johnson of Evergreen, CO. He is preceded in death by his wife Louise and brother, Robert Johnson.
