On August 17, 2011, Champ Andrew Coggin, of Newnan, GA, went peacefully to his eternal rest surrounded by his family. Mr. Coggin was born April 15, 1924 in Newnan to the late Alfred Grady Coggin and Lizzie Lou Banks whose roots extend to the early settlement of Coweta County. He grew up in Madras and was a life-long member of Jones Chapel United Methodist Church (now Faith Creek Methodist Church). He was married to his childhood sweetheart, Sara Emily Phillips, for 68 years. He proposed to her when Pearl Harbor was attacked and they married on August 1, 1942 in the preacher’s front yard. Mr. Coggin said he paid the preacher all the money in his pocket, which was two dollars. He often said it was the best two dollars he ever spent. He never missed his wife’s birthday and this year was no exception as he passed peacefully on Mrs. Coggin’s birthday – less than 6 months after she died. Mr. Coggin served in World War II under General George S. Patton, 3rd Army 4th Armored Division, which received a Presidential Citation for liberating the 101st Airborne in Bastogne at the Battle of the Bulge. He retired from Ford Motor Company, where he served as a quality control inspector for the Hapeville manufacturing facility for more than 30 years. Preceding him in death were his wife Sara Phillips Coggin; brothers William Grady Coggin, Douglas Coggin, Donald Coggin; and sister Frances Coggin Ferrell. Celebrating his life and remembering him with love are children: Cheryl Coggin (Harrell) Glisson and Stanley (Faith) Coggin; grandchildren Alice Coggin Bagley (Ervin) and Drew (Alexa) Coggin; great grandchildren Clark Coggin, Lyla Grace Coggin, Erin Bagley and Austin Bagley; brothers William H. Coggin and Reginald D. Coggin; and a large extended family.
