Mrs. Catherine Byrne Geraghty, 95, passed away peacefully on July 14th, 2012 surrounded by members of her loving family. A longtime resident of Westport, she most recently resided at Heritage Village in Southbury.
Mrs. Geraghty was born on Christmas Day, 1916 and was the daughter of the late Theresa Mulvey and James Byrne. She was a graduate of Mary Immaculate Hospital School of Nursing, Jamaica, New York. While working as a nurse at the hospital, she was introduced to Matthew Geraghty, whom she married in 1946.
Mrs. Geraghty was the school nurse at Staples High School in Westport while also volunteering at summer camps. She was a devoted sponsor of the organization, “Guiding Eyes for the Blind”, and lived that devotion by caring for retired guide dogs in her Westport home. Catherine was also a faithful supporter of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Mrs. Geraghty’s life was almost a century of performing innumerable kindnesses for all who were fortunate enough to cross her path. Her legacy of equanimity, wisdom and pure love will continue to lighten the burdens of all whose lives she touched. A teacher to the end, to see the world through her eyes was a gift for which her children, and her children’s children, will be forever grateful.
She is survived by six sons and their spouses, Matthew James (Christina), Gerard (Susan), Mark (Dianne), John (Linda), Joseph (Phyllis), and Paul (Theresa), as well as twelve grandchildren, two great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Geraghty was predeceased in 1991 by her husband, Matthew P. Geraghty, a CPA and a partner in the New York City firm of Alexander and Grant.
