Carroll William Bates, 62, of 11054 Chatham Road, Axton, VA died Thursday, March 17, 2011 at Morehead Memorial Hospital, Eden, NC. He was born on June 23, 1948 in Henry County, VA to the late Albert Ree Bates, Sr. and Annie Myers Bates. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Scott William Bates. Mr. Bates was a member of Valley Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was a self-employed building contractor and a member of the Ridge Runner Hunt Club. Surviving are his wife, Sandra Manning Bates of the home; daughters, Tracy Bates Pickurel of Martinsville, VA, Ashley Bates Purnell of Greensboro, NC and Crystal Bates Hendley of Cary, NC; step-son, Joshua Davis McDowell of Axton, VA; sisters, Betty Bates Blankenship of Axton, VA and Irene Bates Kennedy of Ocean Isle Beach, NC; brothers, Leonard L. Bates, Henry L. Bates and Albert R. “Junior†Bates all of Axton, VA and grandchildren, Cory Pickurel, Kelley Pickurel, Kaelli Purnell, Alex Purnell and Georgia Hendley.
