Carroll W. Houston, 86, of rural Jacksonville, IL died Thursday, August 14, 2014 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.

He was born April 30, 1928 in rural Alexander, the son of Donald W. and Lucinda Georgina Young Houston. He married Betty Lou Lewis on June 5, 1948 at the First Baptist Church in Ashland and she survives.

He is also survived by three children, Walter “Wally” Houston of Cook’s Station, MO, Brenda Walker (husband, Mike) of rural Winchester, and Sarah Austiff (husband, Jerry) of Bourbannais; 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; a step-brother, Richard E. Snodgrass (wife, Pat) of Chapin; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step mother, Edith “Joan” Snodgrass Houston; two brothers, Richard and Edward Houston; and a step brother, Ralph Snodgrass.

Carroll graduated from Ashland High School and owned and operated the Shell gas station in Ashland prior to joining his family farming operation which specialized in raising Percheron horses. He later worked in sales for Walker Motor Company in Jacksonville, as assistant manager of the Jacksonville Ace Hardware store, and then served as manager of Petefish Chevrolet in Waverly. He relocated to Auburn, where he managed the True Value store for 18 years prior to his retirement. He then returned to Jacksonville where he managed the family farm and cared for his father.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jacksonville and was a former member and past president of the Auburn Sertoma Club. An active mason, Carroll was a 55 year member of Harmony Lodge #3 AF & AM and a past master of the Concord Lodge. He was a member of the Jacksonville York Rite bodies and Ansar Shrine in Springfield. He was a past president of the Ansar Retirees Club and the Ansar Jeepsters. In addition, he was a past worthy patron of the Order of Eastern Star. In his spare time, he enjoyed golf and collecting True Value commemorative trucks.
