He graduated from Osbourn High School in 1945 and received his Bachelor’s Degree in French and Spanish from Bridgewater College in 1951. He served two years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps as a corpsman stationed at a military hospital in Orleans, France. On August 1951, Carroll married his college sweetheart, Geraldine. He completed a Master’s Degree in Education at George Washington University in 1961. Carroll loved the Lord and his family. Carroll is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Geraldine Conner who passed away on July 19, 2008. Carroll is survived by two daughters, Joyce Kitzmiller and her husband David, Jean Jacobsen and her husband Jay; and his grandsons Michael and Daniel Jacobsen. Carroll is preceded in death by his four brothers, Alvin, Jake, Abraham, Earl and his five sisters, Thelma, Alice, Gladys, Norma and Ruth. Carroll returned to Manassas after completing his military service, and began his career as an educator in the Fairfax County Public School System. He served as principal of Clifton Elementary School and taught at several Fairfax County public schools during his career, including Robert Frost Middle School, where he retired. Carroll was a devoted member of the Manassas Church of the Brethren, which he attended all of his life. Over the years, he was a deacon, served on and chaired the Music and Worship Commission, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Also, he served with his wife in the church library, and helped landscape the church grounds. He volunteered with the SERVE (Securing Emergency Resources through Volunteer Efforts) food bank and clothes closet. In 2007, Carroll and his brother, Dr. Alvin Conner, coauthored a book titled People and Places in Lucasville, Virginia, which described their life growing up on the Bloom Hill Farm, and their memories of the people they had met who had lived in the Manassas area during and after the Civil War. The book is now at the Manassas Museum.
