Carol Jean Brown, 86, of Jacksonville, IL and formerly of Muscatine, IA died Saturday, January 19, 2013 at Heritage Health in Jacksonville.
She was born October 19, 1926 in Muscatine, IA, the daughter of Jacob and Cora Kindler Schwab. She married James Neil Brown on August 5, 1950 in Iowa and he preceded her in death on February 13, 1986.
She is survived by a daughter, Cathy Matzen (husband, Keith) of Jacksonville; a granddaughter, Sarah Jean Matzen (fiancé, David Egan) of Portstewart, Northern Ireland; two great grandchildren, Caoilinn and Maitiu Egan of Portstewart, Northern Ireland; and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Melvin Schwab; and a nephew.
Mrs. Brown graduated from Immaculate Heart High School in Hollywood, CA on June 13, 1945. She was excellent in spelling and won State Spelling Bees.
Carol lived with her cousins, George and Thelma Volger while attending high school. Mr. Volger was the general manager for Roy Rogers, which provided the opportunity for Carol to visit with Mr. Rogers, Dale Evans and Trigger while their TV series was filmed.
Mrs. Brown was a homemaker and formerly employed as a housekeeper and nurse aide in an Iowa nursing home.
Carol was active in the PTA, Senior Citizen Organization, Humane Society and St. Mary’s Catholic Church during her 40 years in the Muscatine, Iowa community. She has been a resident of Jacksonville for the past 15 years and was a member of the Church of Our Saviour.
