Carol Doyle Torry, of Newington, died peacefully at the Jefferson House on July 28, 2014. She was 77. Born Carol Ann Doyle on Feb. 6, 1937, in Hartford, to John E. Doyle and Elizabeth (Hogan) Doyle, Dimple was the oldest of four. After a harrowing experience with her mom at the Hartford Circus Fire of 1944, everyone knew that Carol was a survivor. At home, the Queen Bee held court over her three beloved brothers — Jack, Rich, and Bobby. While a student at Newington High School, she was also a regular on Alan Ludden’s syndicated WTIC program “Mind Your Manners.” She used those lessons to questionable effect with her younger siblings. Upon graduating from NHS in 1955, Carol graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Hartford Hospital School of Nursing. In 1959, she married Richard Madden. Sons Rich and Steve soon followed. After ten years of marriage, Carol and Rich divorced, and she and the boys returned to Newington. Carol soon found work as a school nurse in the Newington school system at Martin Kellogg Middle School, where she would work for the next 20 years. She could also keep a close eye on Rich and Steve as they made their way through the halls of MKMS. It was at Martin Kellogg that Carol met and fell in love with Bruce Torry. They married in 1974. Their beautiful daughter Sarah was born in 1977. All of our lives changed after Bruce’s death in 1989 and Carol’s subsequent stroke in that same year. Although she lived these past 25 years in a wheelchair, Carol retained her joy of being with family and friends, traveling to them as much as she could, with the assistance of caregivers Hanya, Mary, Maryann, and Joanie. Trips to California, Vermont, Arizona, Cape Cod, and, of course, Abbott’s on the Connecticut shore, were favorites. Really, anywhere Mom might be able to stop at a tag sale was a favorite, but the absolute best trip was attending Sarah and Jon’s wedding in North Carolina. Throughout everything, nothing gave greater joy to Carol than her family. Carol is survived by her children and their spouses, Rich and Kelly Madden, of Glastonbury; Steve Madden and Carol Norton, of Burlington, Vt.; and Sarah Torry and Jon Marchal, of Black Mountain, NC. She is also survived by grandchildren Eliza, Emily, Connor, Dan, Harper, and Bruce (due any day). Her younger brothers and their spouses — Jack Doyle and Suzanne Serviss, Rich and Reisa Doyle, and Bob and Sally Doyle — also survive Carol, but remember — Dimple still has her eye on you. Carol also had a special place in her heart for her Doyle cousins, as well as her many nieces and nephews, not to mention the whole Flannigan clan. Special thanks to all of the caregivers who made Carol’s last 25 years as comfortable as possible, and to the staff at the Jefferson House.
