Carol Cox Smith went to sleep on earth and woke up in heaven on January 10, 2017.

Born in Missouri in 1935 to Margaret and Burtis Cox, she lived her young life there. In her teens, she moved to Illinois where she graduated from the University of Illinois. She later received a Master’s degree from the University of Colorado. Her early professional career was as an advertising copywriter in Chicago and New York. She moved to Albuquerque in the early seventies where she taught writing at TVI, now CNM. There, she met and married Alvin Smith, a retired Air Force pilot and fellow teacher. She enjoyed 25 years of marriage before his passing in 2001. Throughout her life she continued to follow her passion and gift for writing and published several books and multiple articles in both the fiction and nonfiction field. In her later years, her creativity was expressed through photography. As a result, many family members and friends were gifted with cherished memories.

Many will miss Carol’s bright smile including her sister and brother-in-law, Dodie and Art Hawkins; eight nieces and nephews; 17 great-nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Toby. Carol was active at Faith in the Desert Episcopal Church and Central United Methodist Church and was a committed believer in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. When told that her life would soon end she said, “I’m not afraid. I know where I am going.
