Born February 26, 1936 in Haw River, NC, he was the husband of Mildred M. “Millie” Stout, who survives and the son of Jesse Clarence Stout and Rachel Brown Stout, both deceased.
Pete was a 1954 graduate of Haw River High School. He earned a scholarship to play football and basketball at Catawba College where he lettered four years in both sports. He was co-captain and Little All-American Honorable Mention in football.
Pete was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle.
Pete was a retired football coach. He has been the head football coach at Altamahaw-Ossipee School (also coaching baseball and girl’s basketball), Western Alamance High School (also coaching track and JV Boy’s Basketball), Salisbury Boyden High School, Burlington Williams High School, and Morganton Freedom High School. He was also the head football coach at Catawba College for four years. Coach Stout was a head football coach for 28 years with a won-lost record of 234-63-14 (ties). As a four year head coach at Western Alamance, his 1963 and 1965 teams had 10 win seasons where his defensive teams averaged giving up only 1 touchdown per game. His records include 3 Western North Carolina High School Athletic Association State Champions, 1971, 1973, and 1974; 1 Runner-up, 1970; 2 North Carolina State 3-A Championships 1980 and 1981; 1 Runner-up, 1978; for a total of 5 State Championships, 2 Runner-up; 43 wins in a row which was a state record at the time; and Play-off record of 22 wins, 6 losses, and 1 tie. Later in life, he was elected into the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame and the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Gray Carlton Stout of Charlotte, and Jeffrey Glenn Stout and wife Mary Elizabeth “Beth” P. Stout of Salisbury; grandsons, Ryan Lawrence Stout and wife Hannah I. Stout of Salisbury, Nathaniel Stephen Stout of Atlanta, GA, Nicholas Eugene Stout of Charlotte, and Jay Carlton Stout and wife Rachel P. Stout of Wilmington; Jay’s mother, Gina W. Stout of Wilmington; brother, James H. Stout and wife Sally C. Stout of Waynesboro, VA; and numerous cousins and nieces He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Stout Bunton and daughter-in-law, Heather St. Aubin-Stout.
