Carlos Rene Abreu, a former resident of the Hedgewood Home in Beacon, passed away on January 13, 2022 at the VA Hudson Valley Healthcare Medical Center in Montrose, NY; at the age of 70. He was born Bridgeport, CT on April 12, 1951, son of Romualda Santiago Rivera, the late Carlos Noel Abreu; and also his stepfather the late Vidal Nieves, who helped raised him.

Carlos served his country in the United States Army from 1970 to 1981; and he received an honorable discharge for his service. He enjoyed serving his country as well as the traveling, structure, and routine of service. He served active combat duty briefly in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart as well as other accolades during his tour. After that his remaining service included staffing, supply/warehouse management all over the southwestern US and Panama, as well as serving as a recruiter in Iowa toward the end of his military career.

After retirement from the Army, he enrolled in college and achieved an Associate degree from Lincoln Technical Institute, in auto mechanics. He enjoyed building model cars with his young son at the time and cars in general. Later in the 80’s he began what would be a 13-year career as a delivery driver for Domino’s Pizza in Des Moines Iowa. He enjoyed the frequent driving as well as socializing with his repeat customers and co-workers. He took great pride in his work uniforms and shiny Cadillac and was well known by many around town.

Later in life he returned home to New York to be closer to Family and made the most of his retirement socializing with fellow veterans and others at his apartment in Beacon. He enjoyed music, dancing, and spending quality time relaxing with family and friends.

Along with his beloved mother Romualda Santiago, Carlos is survived by his son Adam Abreu and Godchildren Hannah Wise and Jeremiah Dolecki. He is also survived by his brothers & sisters: Jesus Romero, Edwin Abreu, Yolanda Nieves, Yasmin Nieves, as well as a host of nieces & nephews.

Along with his biological father and stepfather, Carlos is also predeceased by his stepbrother Vidal Nieves Jr.
