Carl R. Sheets, 83, of Salem died unexpectedly at 5:40 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2012 at the Salem Community Hospital. Carl was born October 21, 1928 in Columbiana, Ohio, the son of the late Ross and Irene (Wilhelm) Sheets. He was a 1946 graduate of Columbiana High School where he played football and basketball for the Clippers. He continued his football career and education at The Ohio State University for two years before joining The United States Air Force. He served in the Air Force from 1948 to 1971 where he attained the rank of Major and was a senior navigator bombardier. He was part of the S.A.C. (Strategic Air Command). He served in the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War.
