Carl J. Mitts, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, age 82, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 2:07 am Thursday, February 22, 2007 in his home.

He was born on February 6, 1925 to the late David and Lula (Carter) Mitts in Mount Morris, MI, and has lived in South Bend since 1946, coming from Mount Morris. Along with his parents; he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Kristina Wood; two sisters, Annabelle Kinch; Meridine Logue; and three brothers, Charles Mitts; Floyd Crowe; and Harold McComb.

Mr. Mitts retired in September 1982 from the Torrington Company, after 29 years of employment. Following his retirement from Torrington, he worked at Carlyle Nursing Home for nine years, before retiring in 1991. Mr. Mitts was also the owner of Carls Snack Shop during the 1970s.

On July 5, 1947, he married Loretta Cebulski at St. Stephen Catholic Church in South Bend, IN. She died on February 14, 2006.

He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl (husband Paul) Pluta of South Bend, IN; his son, Ronald (wife April) Mitts of Mishawaka, IN; six grandchildren, Tammy (husband Daryl) Simmons; Kristy (husband Karl) Morris; Betsy Mitts; Richard Wood; Ben Pluta; David Pluta; one great grandson, Doren Morris; one sister, Evelyn ODell: and a special cousin, Joan Zsigrai.

Mr. Mitts was a member of Holy Family Parish; Veteran of Foreign Wars Post No. 360, and past president of the Torrington Retirees Club. He was a proud Marine Veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. Carl was a former golden glove champion under the nickname the fighting marine.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Tammy and Daryl for taking time out of their lives to care for their beloved grandfather. The family would also like to thank the staff at the Milton Adult Day Services, where he attended classes.
