Carl retired from Reese Products of Elkhart after many years as a welder. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting with his dogs, fishing, skiing and snowmobiling. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife and visited nearly every state, with Alaska being his favorite. He was also a multiple-awarded world-class trap shooter, earning his last trophy at the age of 70.
He appreciated backyard visits from his hummingbird and purple martin friends, whom he loved to watch, and enjoyed sports to the point of often watching one game on TV and listening to another on the radio. Up until the end, he remained a die-hard Memorial High School and St. Louis Cardinal fan.
