Choplin and Cora Belle Clodfelter served 21 months in the Navy during WWII, working on supply ships from Virginia to Europe. He retired from Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company. He was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church and a long standing member of the Woodmen of the World. He loved his family, singing, traveling, and the .
