Calla D. Frederick, 86 of Grafton passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, September 16, 2018 at Rosewood Nursing Home . She was born in Wendel, WV,  the eldest daughter of the late Will H. and Vonda Leach Gregory. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Francis M. “Fred” Frederick on February 22, 1999.

Following her graduation from Flemington High School in 1949, she graduated from the National Coaching Institute while completing courses at San Francisco City College. She worked for many years as a secretary for Glenn Martin Aircraft, Zellerbach Paper Company and S&W Fine Foods before becoming an insurance specialist with the New York Stock Exchange while working for Walter C Gorey Investment Company.

Returning to Taylor County in 1967, she was the owner & operator of the Blueville Snack Bar where she met “Fred”; they were married in 1968.

She became active with the VFW Auxiliary and held many offices locally, continuing in the chairs for six years to become State President of that organization and then served for two years as National Chairman of the 14 Southern States  Conference.

Calla served on the executive board of the Preston-Taylor Community Health Centers from the inception of the health clinic and continued to be a board member until her death.  She was a member of the Democrat Executive Committee and served on the Silver Hair Legislature. She was a former Vice President of the Main Street Grafton Committee and was President of the Simpson High School Alumni. In addition, she was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Cooties, B & O Auxiliary and Red Hat Society.

Calla is survived by six children: Vonda M (Joseph) Reneman & Lawrence N. Barnes, of Grafton, Mary Y (Glenn) Bowman & Alma “Cookie” McDonald of California, Gregory (Cathy) Barnes of Baltimore, MD and Kelley (Mark) Hefferin of Florida; 20 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren; and one brother, Hollis (Liz) Gregory of Simpson.

  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Cam E Zinn; three grandchildren: Gregory Scott Hefferin, Ann Marie Hefferin and Jessica Barnes; and her sister Karen Gregory Boutilier.
