Buena Avis Thomas of King’s Grant Retirement Community of Martinsville, Virginia passed away on Monday, June 18, 2012. She was born in Patrick County, Virginia on May 18, 1918 and moved to Martinsville at a very early age with her family. She was predeceased by her parents, Jonah T. Thomas and Nannie Bowling Thomas; sisters, Marga Miles, Verna Shropshire and Mildred Dorton all of Martinsville and Sherlie Brammer of Roanoke, Virginia and brothers, Brown Thomas and Dalton Thomas both of Martinsville. She is survived by one brother, Dr. Harding Thomas of Culpeper, Virginia and a host of nieces and nephews. Miss Thomas was a much respected member of the business community of Martinsville. She was founder of Henry County Small Loan Corporation and Collinsville Finance Corporation and president of those businesses until she retired in 1999. She served on the board of the Virginia Consumer Finance Corporation and was past-president of Martinsville Credit Women’s International. Over the years, she traveled extensively beginning with a trip around the world in 1966. She will be remembered as a generous philanthropist who gave unselfishly to research to cure Alzheimer’s disease in remembrance of her sister, Sherlie Thomas Brammer.
