Bruce D. Johnson, 66, of East Galesburg, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2019, 4:10 PM, at home surrounded by his family. Bruce was born on February 12, 1953 at Cook County Hospital, Chicago. He was the son of DeWayne and Anne (King) Johnson. He married Penny D. Meece in 1976, together they had two children. Bruce later married Deborah Allen in September of 1982, together they had two children.

Bruce married Cassandra S. Johnson in June of 2016 in Galesburg. Bruce is survived by his wife Sue of East Galesburg; three children, Todd (Jamie) Johnson of Oneida, Rebecca Johnson and Sara Johnson, both of Galesburg; two step-daughters, Bambi (Jerry) Strom of Galesburg and Michael Knutson of Abingdon; eight grandchildren, one great grandchild and six step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Kelly Johnson. Bruce was an operating engineer for the IOUE 649 for 46 years, retiring in 2015. He received journeyman status for International Union of Operating Engineers Local 649.

He had also worked for Kistler Construction and Thomas Plumbing and Heating. Bruce ran Johnson Excavating, and volunteered his excavating services for the construction of the new track and field at Knoxville High School. Bruce loved to be outdoors or in his garage tinkering and building. He is known to have the largest tool collection in Knox County, which jokingly consists of 10,000 screw drivers. Bruce was a very caring, nonjudgmental person. He never knew a stranger. He helped coach YMCA Youth League Basketball; taught Sunday school at First Lutheran Church. He loved to travel to visit family. Most of all, Bruce loved to spend time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren.
