Brother Clement Burger, C.S.C. July 14, 1942 – Aug. 24, 2014 NOTRE DAME – Brother Clement Adam Burger, C.S.C., age 72, died on August 24, 2014, at Dujarie House in Notre Dame, Indiana. He was born July 14, 1942, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the son of Clement Sr. and Jeanette (Schulz) Burger. He entered St. Joseph Elementary School in 1948, graduating in 1956 and then went to Lancaster Catholic High School, where he graduated in June of 1960. Brother Clement entered the University of Notre Dame in the fall of 1960. He majored in history and government and graduated in June 1964. He proceeded into the graduate school at Notre Dame and earned a Master of Arts degree in the fields of government and international studies in 1967. While participating in a Cursillo retreat at Notre Dame, he was inspired by a presentation from a Holy Cross Brother that led him to make the decision to become a brother. He joined the Brothers’ formation program in Basil Hall of the Holy Cross Brothers Center in the fall of 1967. He began his novitiate year the next spring at St. Joseph’s Novitiate in Valatie, New York, and pronounced his first vows as a Holy Cross Brother on June 16, 1969. He returned to South Bend and was assigned to teach at St. Joseph’s High School for a year and then he joined the faculty at Gibault School for Boys in Terre Haute for a year. In 1971 he moved to Boysville of Michigan where he served on the staff at Clinton, Michigan, for four years. Brother Clement was eager to return to the classroom and was assigned to join the faculty at Holy Trinity High School in Chicago in 1975 where he taught for the next 32 years. He was highly regarded as a stimulating and outstanding teacher in the history, government and law courses that he taught. His students often won the ‘Street Law Moot Court’ competition sponsored by the Loyola University Law School. His courses came alive for his students through frequent visits to courtrooms and legislative sessions within the halls of city, state, federal governments and historical sites, particularly during summer excursion trips. Brother Clement’s creativity and commitment to the mission of Holy Trinity were illustrated over the years by his dedication to faithfully managing the bookstore where he was noted for its organization and his efficiency. He faithfully served as moderator and inspiration for his students who were members of the National Honor Society. He was honored by colleagues on the faculty as a highly motivated and inspiring teacher as evidenced by the many graduates who visited and thanked him for the careers he had recommended. Brother Clement served at Holy Trinity until 2007 and was one of the last Brothers to work there. He then joined the staff of St. Joseph College Seminary at Loyola University in Chicago. Brother Clement served there for 6 years and fondly remembered the seminarians from foreign countries who appreciated his concern and guidance.
