Billy Winfred Hartis, 84, of 4738 The Great Road, Fieldale, VA died Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at his home. He was born on August 9, 1926 in Henry County, VA to the late John Franklin Hartis and Maude St. Clair Hartis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Hartis. Mr. Hartis was a member of the Fieldale United Methodist Church, Fieldale, VA and served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Rangley Ruritan Club, the American Legion of Bassett, VA, the Henry County Beekeepers Association and a member of the Flutter Wheels Square Dancing Club of Rangley. Mr. Hartis worked for E. I. DuPont, Inc. as an Experimental Technician and retired after 36 years service. Surviving are his wife, Lorene Overby Hartis of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce Hartis Johnston and Steve Johnston of Franklin County, VA and Karen Hartis Foster and David Foster of Abingdon, VA; son and daughter-in-law, Richard Hartis and Becky Hartis of Henry County, VA; sisters, Shirley Hartis Hodges of Fieldale, VA and Hilda Hartis Hall of Shallotte, NC; grandchildren, Jeffrey Tatum, Bronzie “Trey†Fain, III and Sara Roetken and her husband, Chris Roetken and beekeeping friend, Larry Kelley of Northern Virginia. The family wants to give special thanks to his caregiver, Bernice Millner.
