Bill Fields passed away peacefully and surrounded by love on November 16, 2017. The son of Joe and Nina Fields, he was born on February 19, 1932 and spent his early years in Saltville, Virginia. In those years he was active in 4H, winning several awards and lettering in four varsity sports in high school. In addition, he was first trumpet in the band and had to obtain special permission to march in his football uniform. This same drive led him to achieve the level of 32nd degree Mason later in life. While attending National Business College in Roanoke, he enlisted in the US Navy during the Korean War. During this time, he served aboard the USS Yancey until his discharge in 1955. Then he returned to Virginia where he spent several years working in manufacturing. Later he began a career with State Farm Insurance. After building a successful agency in Roanoke, he became District Sales Manager in Northern Virginia, doubling its size and making it a top performing district. The number of men and women he hired, trained and mentored to successful careers is legend. While an agent, he married Gertrud Burner in 1975. For the next forty-two years he was her dedicated and loving spouse until her recent passing in August. He remained an adoring father and grandfather to her three daughters and granddaughters. During their marriage, Bill and Gertrud traveled the world together and lived alternately in Virginia and Florida. Bill is preceded in death by his wife, Gertrud Fields, a granddaughter, Alexis, and a great granddaughter, Miraculous Faith. He is survived by his daughter Susan and her husband Al, granddaughter Nicole and her husband Randy – daughter Deborah and granddaughter Zandra – daughter Theresa and her fiancé Danny, granddaughter Alyssa and her husband Laurie.
