Mrs. Beulah Y. Philbrook, 91, of Elkhart, passed away at Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Valley View of Elkhart Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, following an extended illness.
She was born the youngest of 10 children April 19, 1921, in Marshall County to the late Watson S. and Mary Alice (Andrews) York. On Valentine’s Day in 1942, she married Everett G. Philbrook in East Haven, Conn. He passed away in Elkhart in 2000.
She is also preceded in death by her nine siblings.
Surviving are her son, Rodger Philbrook of Elkhart; her daughter, Katherine Detore of Seattle; four grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
Beulah was a homemaker and hairdresser who, in the 1960s and ’70s, had salons in Tyner and Plymouth. She enjoyed painting murals, tracing her family’s genealogy and working as a reporter for the Plymouth Pilot, where she would regularly submit all of the daily news from Tyner in a column known as the “Tyner News.” She was also the 1939 class valedictorian at Tyner High School.
