Bettye Leona Evans, 97 years old, beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother went to be with her maker on October 2, 2017, at Stratford Pines Nursing Home in Midland, Michigan.

Bettye was born in Fairfield, Iowa on October 2, 1920. She was married to Robert Clark Evans on June 6, 1942, at the Methodist Church in St. Augustine, Florida. Bettye was a wonderful and caring school teacher, teaching grade school in several locations including overseas in Morocco and Spain. She retired in 1975 after teaching 5th grade for 16 years at the grade school in Herscher, Illinois.

Bettye enjoyed painting and created 20 oil paintings during her lifetime. She also enjoyed writing poetry and collecting shells.

Bettye was predeceased by her husband Robert C. Evans, her sister Lois Vanderheyden, her brother-in-law Malcolm Vanderheyden, her father Leslie Leo Schmidt, and her mother Martha (Schuler) Schmidt.

Surviving families are her son and daughter-in-law Donald C. and Billie Jo Evans of Metropolis, Illinois, her son, and daughter-in-law Richard A. and Karen E. Evans of Midland, Michigan, and her daughter Linda Caraher of North Granby, Connecticut as well as her five grandchildren and their spouses Shannon and Paul Wendricks, Meredith and Corey Grady, Thomas and Emma Caraher, Matthew Evans, and Anne and Jared Love and her five great-grandchildren Gavin Wendricks, Brooklyn Wendricks, Carter Grady, Lillian Grady, and William Caraher.
