Betty Geneva Walters passed away peacefully at her Albuquerque home surrounded by her husband and daughters on the evening of December 27, 2016. Betty was born on February 28, 1937, to Henry Bailey and Charlotte Machen in Seymour, TX. She is survived by her beloved husband of 53 years, Henry Adam Walters, her daughters, Renee Lynn Matthews and Cheryl Lea Walters (Tony Verow); and her four grandchildren, Kathryn Elizabeth Matthews, Emily Anne Matthews, Nathaniel Frances Verow and Naomi Rose Verow. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Geraldine Nida, who passed away earlier this year. Betty’s passions in life included her family, learning and traveling. Memories of our beautiful Betty include her smile and laughter, camping, boat rides, cruises, traveling the country, hearing her play the piano softly in the evenings, and seeing her always reading books on history, religions, and politics. Her love of learning helped her achieve her goals of adventure from growing up in a small farming town. She graduated as the Valedictorian of her high school and received a full two year scholarship to Cottey Women’s College in Missouri, earning a nursing degree. She then continued her love of education in Tulsa, OK, where she earned a degree in radiology and laboratory technology. She moved to Albuquerque to continue her career in healthcare, met the man she would marry, and start her family. After she retired, she earned three more degrees: a Liberal Arts degree in 2002, and a degree in history and a degree in political science from the University of New Mexico in 2005, at the age of 68.
