Bertha Wilson, 99, formerly of W. Front Street in New Carlisle, passed away at 4:07pm Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at Millers Merry Manor in New Carlisle.
She was born on June 29, 1906 to the late Arnott B. and Mary Elizabeth (Dickinson) Cowgill in Wolcott, IN, and has lived in New Carlisle since 1944, coming from South Bend. She was preceded in death by her son, Donald R. Wilson, Jr. in 1989; and three brothers, Leo, William, and Arthur Cowgill.
Mrs. Wilson retired in 1971 as the New Carlisle Town Hall Clerk-Treasurer, after serving three terms from 1960 until 1971. Prior to that, she was employed as the Head Cook for the New Carlisle School System from 1955-1959.
On December 30, 1928, as Bertha Cowgill, she married Donald R. Wilson, Sr., at her parents home in Wolcott, IN. He died on January 25, 1990.
She is survived by two daughters, Colletta Garrage of South Bend, IN; Gayle (Mike) Garrage of Granger, IN; one son, Robert (Jacqueline) Wilson of Buchanan, MI; five grandchildren, Donald R. (Robin) Wilson, III; Rob (Cheryl) Wilson; Melissa Emery; Jacqueline (Brian) Nemeth; Scott (Jillian) Garrage; and six great grandchildren.
Mrs. Wilson graduated from Wolcott High School in 1923 and attended De Pauw University in Greencastle, IN.
She was a member of the New Carlisle United Methodist Church; member of the Eastern Star; War Mothers; and American Legion Post No. 297 Ladies Auxiliary, all of New Carlisle. Bertha was an active member of the Democratic Party; and enjoyed reading, gardening and spending time with her family.
