Bertha Ortiz Phillips, affectionately known as Nana, 87, of Chester passed away on Monday, June 17, 2024. Born April 22, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Manuela and Roberto Ortiz, Sr., and was also preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Phillips, Sr.; son, Michael Phillips; sisters, Amellia Kilbane, Hortencia Garcia, Felicita Adkins; brother, Roberto Ortiz, Jr.; and brothers-in-law, Fred Phillips, Jr., and Douglas Phillips.

Bertha was a devoted parishioner of St. Ann Catholic Church, where she served faithfully as a Eucharistic Minister.

Bertha lived a life rich in love, joy, and service. She had a passion for crocheting, creating beautiful pieces that will be treasured by her family and friends for years to come. As an avid reader, she found solace and adventure in the pages of her books.

A talented cook and baker, Bertha’s kitchen was always filled with the comforting aromas of her delicious creations, bringing people together and filling her home with warmth. She also had a love for travel, exploring new places and cultures with an open heart and a curious spirit. Yard sales were another of her favorite pastimes, where she enjoyed finding hidden treasures and connecting with others in her community.

Above all, Bertha’s greatest joy was her family.

She is survived by her children, Marshall Phillips, Jr. (Stephanie), Sally Dillon (James), James Kevin Phillips, Tricia Cubert (Zach), Fred T. Phillips III (Lesley); grandchildren, Marshall Loudon Phillips, Kathryn Turner, James Dillon, Mary Dillon, Michael Phillips, Jr., Kaitlynn Gordon, Christopher Phillips, Joey Vangel, Sara Edwards, Megan Phillips; eight great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Winnie Phillips; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
