As the only boy in the family, Berry was affectionately nicknamed “Zack” by his three doting sisters. Berry grew up and attended school in Filer, ID. He later enlisted in the Navy and served on the destroyer and flagship U.S.S. O’Brien (DD-725) during times of peace.
