Bernard Paul Walter, Jr., 78, of Linthicum, Maryland, passed away on February 5, 2021, at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, surrounded by his family. Bernie was born on September 3, 1942, in Brooklyn Park, Maryland, to the late Anna and Bernard Walter, Sr. He graduated from Brooklyn Park High School and went on to earn his Master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Maryland. He was a teacher, coach, and athletic director for Arundel High School, and over his illustrious coaching career, is the winningest public school baseball coach in Maryland history. In addition to Arundel High School baseball, Bernie was also associated with the USA Baseball Junior National Team, Maryland Monarchs 18U Baseball team, Mayo American Legion Baseball Team, Leone’s-Johnny’s Baseball Club, and the University of Maryland Baseball Team. Bernie authored one of the premier instructional books for human kinetics, The Baseball Handbook.
Bernie is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Barbara C. Walter; his loving daughter, Kelly Llobet and her husband, Rodolfo; his cherished grandchildren, Anna, Rodolf, Ignatius, Nico, and Gus; his dear sister, Ann Sparkman; and his best friend and companion, Murphy Dog.
