Bernard A Barufaldi passed away unexpectedly on December 16th, 2021. He was born July 19th, 1937; the only child of Elio W. and Helen A. (Pirani) Barufaldi of Plymouth. Bernard’s education was very important to him. He graduated with honors from Plymouth High School in 1955. He attended Holy Cross University and received a Bachelor of Science Degree. He was in the Naval ROTC program and graduated with honors. Bernard went on to serve in the US Navy and retired as Lt. Commander. He then attended Vanderbilt University and received his Master’s degree in the Arts and History and graduated in 1968.Bernard then returned to the Navy as a civilian employee to teach as a professor of history and taught on board various Naval ships such as the US Harper’s Ferry.During the 1970’s he also received another Master’s degree in Arts education from the University of Massachusetts. Between the 1980’s and 1990’s he was a professor at Bryant College and Rhode Island College. He then returned again to the Navy to teach on board ships. He eventually returned home to take care of his ailing Mother, Helen.Being the son of a Naval Officer it was in his blood to become a world traveler. Bernard had traveled far and wide and enjoyed the majestic beauty, and learning about the cultures of so many different countries. He especially loved the people he met along the way and had kept in touch with them right up until his passing in December. He was able to explore countries on 6 of the 7 continents and often with no more than his backpack; his good naval training came in handy.Bernard was a lover of the arts. He treasured his cousin Silvio’s paintings; many focusing on historical scenes in Plymouth. He enjoyed music of many different genres especially classical and Broadway show tunes. Bernard enjoyed watching old foreign movies, his favorite candy was Australian and German licorice, having Chinese food·on Thanksgiving with friends, a good cup of coffee, and for a while he put his gardening skills to : How he loved the felines! He rescued many and adored them all. Which brings us to his last treasure “Whiplash”. She was his baby and yes a wonderful lady Katherine took her in and is giving her a loving home. Bernard is smiling down on them.Bernards mind was a wealth of information. He did and saw so much in his lifetime and once said “he saw the best of life and often the worst of life”. Being a history major was sometimes heart wrenching but he always concentrated on the amazing beauty in our world.Bernard was a democratic icon with a capital “D”. Anyone that knew him realized his passion for politics. He even had Bernie Sanders and the White House phone numbers in his address book. His many writings reflected his zest for the political scene.Bernard loved tennis. He was an avid player, enjoyed teaching and was a loyal spectator. Once he actually gave up his teaching position at Bryant College to attend the Australian Open. For numerous years he played and taught at the Eel River Beach Club and the Plymouth summer recreational program. He even made a very good attempt to go “Pro” but fell just short in the finals. He was that accomplished in the Plymouth Historical Society used Bernards knowledge of historical information regarding the Plymouth community. He especially liked writing about the Plymouth airport. Bernard was just a little boy when his Father Elio started his helicopter spraying business and was the founder of the then very small airport and field. That little boy grew up to be a professor of history and a very avid writer.Bernard leaves behind his first cousins Albert E. Anable and wife Joanne of Plymouth, NH, Jane Annable Tripp of Portland, ME and Joyce E. Faux and husband Robert of Cape Cod and their families. Cousin Cookie (Helen) and Paul Zaniboni of Plymouth and their family, and many close friends he met along his way through his vast schooling, teaching, travelling and his years in the Navy. Bernard will be missed.
