Berl Dawson Hamm, age 77, of Hitchins, passed away Monday, March 13, 2017, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
Born February 4, 1940, in Rowan County, he was a son of the late Hazel Perry Hamm and Virgie Francess Jewell Hamm. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Jean Fultz Hamm; and one daughter, Tammy Ann Hall.
Berl is survived by his wife, Mary Caskey Hamm; two sons, Anthony Wayne Hamm of Boiling Springs, South Carolina, and Timothy Lee Hamm and Nikki of Morehead; one daughter, Kimberly Diane Towe and Duane of Chesnee, South Carolina; seven stepchildren, Eugene Eldridge and Delie, Roy Eldridge and Carolyn, Maggie Cantrell and Gary, Marsha Holbrook and John, Crystal Hedge and Danny, all of Hitchins, Debbie Seagraves and Russell of Denton, and Bonnie Owens and Dustin of Grayson; 15 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 15 step grandchildren; and 24 step great grandchildren.
Other survivors include three brothers, Bill Hamm and Douglas Hamm of Fleming County and Mitchell Hamm of Rowan County; two sisters, Ethel Callahan and Gail Sparks of Hazel Park, Michigan; nieces and nephews; extended family, including members of the Hitchens Fire Department; and many friends.
Berl retired as a fork lift operator from Clear Creek Hardwoods in Grayson. A founding member of the Hitchins Fire Department, Berl spent more than 30 years as Assistant Chief, a position he held at the time of his passing.
